Trip to upper/lower Long Churn -- 6th Feb 2005

Group: Dennis, Paul, Dave

A quick trip up to Yorkshire to start the season and provide an excuse for slipping into Bernies etc. We loaded the Van and headed off to Ingleton stopping at Daleswear who were having a sale which was an excuse for Dennis to buy a new tackle sack. We then carried on arriving at Selside around Midday. It was surprisingly quiet with only 3 other vehicles as we got changed and headed off towards Alum Pot with another couple of cavers who were heading for Dolly tubs. We could hear voices at the bottom of Alum and pressed on to the enclosure with the entrances to Long Churn.

We wandered into upper long churn first, there was a tackle sack perched on a ledge and about 200 yards in we met the owners on their way out. We carried on to Dr Bannisters were Dave made Paul and Dennis hang around while he tried to coax his slave flashgun into life.

After a bit of mucking around the photographic session was abandoned and we headed back to the entrance. Dennis stopped to empty his wellies and adjust his new tackle sack.

After this it was time to go into lower long churn and try to avoid falling in the two pools double shuffle and plank. The first was circumvented by all (Dave fell in on the previous trip), however Dennis managed a slip getting out of plank and landed in it.

The rest of the trip was uneventful and we carried on to the cheesepress. Paul and Dave managed to slip through this without any problem, Dennis had to climb down the pitch towards the font.

We carried on to the top of the dollytubs pitch where there was ropework in situ left by two groups, one group were just prussiking out just as we headed back. We climbed back up the pitch over the font and headed back to daylight and thence to Bernies.

Overall trip time: 1.5 hours
